Understanding the structure of hero based stories. The 10 steps are the work of Joseph Campbell, an American psychologist and mythological researcher. He discovered several common patterns that are in many hero myths and stories. Name the 10 patterns.
Heroes live in a world that is considered ordinary by its citizens.
Separation
The person may hold some ability or characteristic that makes them feel peculiar or out of place.
Separation
Usually there is an incident or an encounter with danger that starts them on a heroic path.
In some instances, heroes come upon the quest by accident.
Call to Adventure
Heroes embark on journey and enter a world they never experienced before.
The may have supernatural creatures, constant threat of death or breathtaking sights.
Entering the Unknown
The new world has different rules that must be learned and followed.
Their endurance, strength and courage are tested time and time again.

Supernatural means “above the laws of nature”
Supernatural aid, meeting the mentor
Every hero needs a helper.
Most heroes would fail miserably withot their helpers.
Allies/ helpers
A series of tests, tasks, or ordeals the hero must experience during the transformation.
Usually occur in 3’s and sometimes fail, which prepares them for the final task.
The road to trials
This is the obstacle they have journeyed so far to overcome.
The journey has hardened them and it is time to show their newly learned skill.
The Supreme Ordeal
The new world has different rules that must be learned and followed.
Once the obstacle has been overcome, the tension will be relieved but the quest is still not over.

After completing the Supreme Ordeal, and collecting the reward/prize, the hero will return home.
The Magic Flight
The return journey is not always smooth there may be some small obstacles to overcome.
This can occur as a chase or a battle.

Usually the hero must confront whatever holds the ultimate power in his/her life.
Confronting the Father
In many stories this is the father or father figure who has life and death power.

The Heroes quest was life changing.
The hero ofter returns with an object or power to save their world.
