What’s the stage? This is where we meet the hero in their normal life, before the adventure begins. It’s like the starting level of a game, where you’re just getting to know the controls
The ordinary world
What’s the stage? Something happens that changes the hero’s life, offering them an exciting or scary new opportunity.
The call to adventure
What’s the stage? Here, the hero hesitates or says “No way!”
Refusal of the call
What’s the stage? The hero meets someone wise who gives them advice or gear.
Meeting the mentor.
What’s the stage? Now, the hero is ready for action and crosses into the adventure world.
Crossing the first threshold.
What’s the stage? The hero faces challenges, meets friends, and fights foes
Tests, allies and enemies.
What’s the stage? The hero gets ready for the big challenge in the daring part of the adventure.
Approach to the innermost cave.
What’s the stage? The hero faces a huge obstacle or enemy, the main boss battle of the story.
The ordeal.
What’s the stage? After defeating the foe, the hero gets some sort of reward.
Reward or seizing the sword.
What’s the stage? The hero starts travelling home, but there might be a few more skirmishes or challenges.
The road back.
What’s the stage? This is the hero’s final and most dangerous encounter with death—the ultimate climax of the story where everything is on the line.
Resurrection.
What’s the stage? The hero goes back to their ordinary world, but their life is forever changed, and they often bring back something that can help others.
Return with elixir.
