The heart Flashcards
This is for higher AQA GCSE. The sources are the CGP revision guide.
what is the purpose of the circulatory system?
- Carry food and oxygen to every cell in the body.
2. Carry waste products to where they can be removed out of the body.
what is the circulatory system made up of?
- Heart
- Blood vessels
- Blood
Humans have a double circulatory system. What does the first one involve?
The right ventricle pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs where it gets oxygenated. the oxygenated blood then returns to the heart.
Humans have a double circulatory system. What does the second one involve?
The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood around all the other organs of the body. The blood gives up its oxygen and the deoxygenated blood returns to the heart to be pumped out to the lungs again.
What is the heart?
A muscular organ that pumps blood around the body.
What are the walls of the heart made from?
Muscle tissue.
What is the purpose of the valves?
They prevent blood from flowing backwards.
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four chambers
Name the four chambers of the heart.
- Left ventricle.
- Right ventricle.
- Left atrium.
- Right atrium.
How does blood flow into the atria?
Through the vena cava and pulmonary vein.
Why do the atria contract?
To push the blood into the ventricles.
What happens when the ventricles contract?
The blood is pushed into the pulmonary artery and the aorta, then out of the heart.
How does the blood flow to the organs?
Through the arteries.
What is the purpose of the veins?
Return the blood back to the heart.
Describe how the blood flows around the body.
The blood flows into the atria through the vena cava and the pulmonary vein.
The atria contract, forcing the blood into the ventricles.
The blood flows into the ventricles and then pumped out of the heart through the pulmonary artery and the aorta.
Arteries carry blood to the organs. The veins return the blood to the heart.
Then the whole process is repeated.
