The Heart Flashcards
draw a rough diagram of the heart as its needed hun
where is the pulmonary artery and what does it carry?
- top right, connected to ventricle (heart right)
- carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs
where is the vena cava and what does it carry?
- right atrium (heart right)
- carries deoxygenated blood from the body
where is the aorta and what does it carry?
- top left, connected to ventricle (heart left)
- carries oxygenated blood to the body
where is the pulmonary vein and what does it carry?
- left atrium (heart left)
- carries oxygenated blood back from the lungs
when do the atrioventricular valves open?
they open when the pressure is higher in the atria than in the ventricles
when do the semi-lunar valves open?
when the pressure is higher in the ventricles than in the blood vessels leaving the heart
what is diastole?
the relaxation of the heart
what happens during diastole?
- atria relax and fill with blood so pressure in atria increases
- ventricles are relaxed
- SL valves are closed
- AV open
- some blood enters ventricles due to gravity
what is systole?
the contraction of the heart
what happens during atrial systole?
- the pressure in the atria increases til it is greater than the pressure in ventricles
- atria contract forcing remaining blood into ventricles
- ventricles remain relaxed
- SL valves are closed
- AV are open
what happens during ventricular systole?
- atria relax
- ventricles contract
- SL valves open
- AV close
- blood is pushed away from the heart
