The Heart Flashcards
Define:
Cardiac Arrest
a sudden, sometimes temporary, cessation (a stopping) of function of the heart.
Define:
Ventricular fibrillation (V-fib)
A heart rhythm problem that occurs when the heart beats with rapid, erratic electrical impulses. This causes the ventricles to quiver uselessly, instead of pumping blood.
Define:
Cardiac Tamponade
pressure on the heart that occurs when blood or fluid builds up in the space between the heart muscle (myocardium) and the outer covering sac of the heart (pericardium).
What is the function of the heart?
The heart functions as the body’s circulatory pump.
What is the heart?
The heart is a muscular organ that is about the size of a closed fist.
What are arteries?
Tubes that take oxygenated blood away from the heart
What are veins?
Tubes that carry deoxygenated blood to the heart.
What are the major functions of the heart?
takes deoxygenated blood from the veins to the lungs to get the blood oxygenated before pumping it into arteries which then take the blood to other organs
What is The Thoracic Cavity?
The chest cavity. Is protected by the thoracic wall (rib cage and associated skin, muscle, and the fascia). The central compartment of this cavity is the mediastinum (a membranous division between two cavities or organs).
Aorta
The body’s largest artery. Takes oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to the body.
Pulmonary artery
Carries deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
Right atrium
Receives deoxygenated blood from the body
Pulmonary vein
Takes oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Left ventricle
Pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta
Right Ventricle
pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary artery
