The heart Flashcards
Sinoatrial node (SA node)
Generates an electrical impulse that causes the atrial myocardium to contract and force blood into the ventricles.
Acts as a natural pacemaker. The electrical impulses are then distributed to the AV node.
Atriovenricular node (AV node)
Causes a delay in the electrical impulses to allow the atrium to contract before contracting the ventricles. It then distributes the impulses to the Bundle of His.
Bundle of His
Found in the septum of the heart. Distributes the impulses to the Purkinje Fibres.
Purkinje Fibres
Found in the myocardium of the ventricles and once electrical impulses are distributed to them they cause a contraction in the ventricles, forcing the blood around the body.
Cardiac output
The volume of blood leaving the left ventricle per minute.
Stroke volume
The volume of blood that leaves the left ventricle per beat.
Heart Rate
Number of heart beats per minute.
Equation for cardiac output
Cardiac output = Stroke Volume * Heart rate
