the heart Flashcards
1
Q
blood vessels
A
- artery
- capillary
- vein
2
Q
artery
A
takes blood away from the heart
3
Q
vein
A
takes blood to the heart
4
Q
pulmonary circulation
A
heart → lung → heart
5
Q
systemic circulation
A
heart → rest of body → heart
6
Q
receiving chambers of the heart
A
atria
7
Q
ejecting chambers of the heart
A
ventricles
8
Q
left atrium
A
- recieves oxygenated blood from the lungs via pulmonary veins
- blood is pumped into the left ventricle via bicuspid valve
9
Q
bicuspid valve
A
mitral valve / left atrioventricular valve / AV valve
10
Q
left ventricle
A
- its walls are three times the thickness of the right ventricle’s
- bicuspid valve closes and blood collects in the ventricle
- the heart muscle’s contractions force blood through the aortic semilunar valve into the aorta
11
Q
right atrium
A
- larger than the left atrium, but has thinner walls
- two major veins that return blood to the heart from all over the body
- superior vena cava → returns deoxygenated blood from the upper body
- inferior vena cava → returns deoxygenated blood from the lower body
- pumped into the right ventricle via the tricuspid valve (right AV valve)
