The heart Flashcards
Which side of the heart pump blood to the lungs/ the rest of the body?
Th right side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs.
The left side pumps oxygenated blood to the rest of the body
Label the diagram of the heart
Where are the atrioventricular valves and what is their function?
The atrioventricular valves link the atria to the ventricles andstop blood flowing back into the atria when the ventricles contract.
Why do ventricles have thicker walls than atira?
Ventricles have thicker walls than atria as they have to push blood out of the heart whereas the atria just need to push blood a short distance to the ventricles.
Why is the left ventricle muscle wall thicker than the right ventricle muscle wall?
The left ventricle muscle wall is thicker as it needs to contract powerfully to pump blood all around the body, whereas the right ventricle only needs to get blood to the lungs.
Where are the semi-lunar valves nad what is the function?
The semi lunar valves link the ventricles to the ventricles to the pulmonary artery and aorta., and stop blood flowing back into the heart after the ventricles contract.
Where are the cords and what is their function?
The cords (valve tendons) attach the atrioventricular valves to the ventricles and to stop them being forced up into the atria when the ventricles contract.
How do valves work?
What are the names for cardiac contaction and relaxation?
cardiac contraction - systole
cardiac relaxtion - diastole
What is the first stage of the cardiac cycle?
What is the second stage of the cardiac cycle?
What is the third stage of the cardiac cycle?
