The Heart Flashcards
Superior Vena Cava
- Largest vein in the body
- Carries deoxygenated blood from upper half of the body and returns it to right atrium
Right pulmonary artery
Carries deoxygenated blood from the RIGHT ventricle to the lungs
Right atrium
- Receives blood from
- Pumps to the right ventricle
Left atrium
- Receives blood from veins
- Pumps blood over to the left ventricle
Right pulmonary veins/left pulmonary vein
Oxygenated blood from lungs is circulated back to the heart through pulmonary veins which drain into the left or right atrium
Tricuspid valve
- On right side
- When atria fills to capacity, the tricuspid valve opens to allow blood from from right atrium to right ventricle
Right ventricle
Passes blood into the pulmonary artery which sends the blood to the lungs to pick up oxygen
Chordae tendinae
Resembles “heart strings” - holds the atrioventricular valves in place while the heart pumps blood
Inferior vena cava
Transports deoxygenated blood from the abdomen and lower extremities to the right side of the heart for oxygenation
Aorta
Largest artery - carries oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle of the heart to other parts of the body
Left pulmonary artery
Pumps deoxygenated blood to the left lung
Pulmonary valve
- Opens to allow blood to be pumped from the right ventricle to the lungs
- Prevents the back flow of blood from the pulmonary artery to the right ventricle
