The Harder questions Flashcards
1
Q
What materials are obtained by mining?
A
Potassium chloride, potassium sulfate and phosphate rock
2
Q
How is phosphate rock treated?
A
Nitric acid or sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid to produce soluble salts that can be used as fertilisers
3
Q
Phosphate rock + nitric acid
A
Calcium nitrate + phosphoric acid
Phosphoric acid contains phosphorous and cannot be directly used on plants so you neutralise it with ammonia
This produces ammonium phosphate
4
Q
Phosphate rock + sulfuric acid
A
Calcium phosphate and calcium sulfate (single superphosphate)
5
Q
Phosphate rock + Phosphoric acid
A
Triple superphosphate
6
Q
What is the equation for the haber process?
A
3H2 + N2 ——-> 2NH3
