The Haber Process Flashcards
How is the Haber process used?
To manufacture ammonia, which is used to produce nitrogen-based fertilisers
What are the raw materials needed for this process?
- Purified nitrogen - from the fractional distillation of liquid air
- Hydrogen - from natural gas or steam
The nitrogen and hydrogen are passed over a an iron catalyst catalyst at a?
- Moderately high temperatures around (450 degrees)
* High pressure (about 200 atmosphere)
On cooling the ammonia liquifies and can be removed from he mixture.
The unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled.
Nitrogen + hydrogen —> ammonia
(Reversible reaction)
The reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen is?
Exothermic
What would a high temperature do to the reaction?
Faster rate of reaction
Low yield
A low reaction temperature would?
Lower rate of reaction and and produce high yield
Moderate temperatures are used.
Why are fertilisers used?
To replace essential elements found in soil that are used up by plants to grow
