A

-York thought Somerset was planning an attack on him (no evidence)
-York was also seeking the removal of Somerset due to his failure in France
-York tried to get Somerset removed through parliament but failed so now only saw the coup as a way to get him removed

A

-Henry was active in sorting out justice
-strong economy and military compared to loss of Normandy
-majority of nobility were unwilling to to take up there arms and support York
- Kent did not rise in support because it didn’t want a repeat of beheadings that followed cades rebellion

what happened during the coup of 1452?

A
  • York managed to acquire the support of William Courtney, Earl of Devon.
    -York reached Dartford in Kent on march 2nd to find Henry already there with a much strong army ( Earl of Warwick, Salisbury and Buckingham)
  • with no other choice, York got down on his knees and submitted a list of complaints about Somerset.
    -Henry listened but took no further action
  • he forced York to swear an oath of alliance again and promise to never use force to gain political advances

what happened during the battle of St. Albans?

A

-on May 22nd 1455, York Feared that Somerset would try to seek revenge for his imprisonment to he decided to strike first by raising an army, heading to London.
-Somerset had an army of 2,000 York had an army of 3,000 BUT Somerset had Henry with him
-overall success, York captures Henry and executes Somerset.

A

-York was made protectorate in march 1454
-Henry was still catatonic and England needed a leader.
- nobles were unwilling to agree with York
-York was successful in: wool trade, increases crowns income and retaining calicos.
