The Greenhouse Effect Flashcards
what is the greenhouse effect?
the greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when gases in the Earth’s atmosphere trap the sun’s heat, causing the temperature of the atmosphere to rise.
what is the enhanced greenhouse effect?
the enhanced greenhouse effect refers to human activities that are adding to the warming of the atmosphere due to the greenhouse effect.
what is climate?
the climate is defined as the long term patterns of temperature, humidity, wind, etc. in an area.
what is global warming?
global warming is a scientific theory that suggests that the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere is rising.
what are the six main greenhouse gases?
carbon dioxide, methane, water vapour, nitrous oxide and CFC’s
what human activities are contributing to the enhanced greenhouse effect?
burning fossil fuels such as oil, coal and natural gas, agriculture and land clearing.
what causes the greenhouse effect?
radiation from the sun penetrates into the earth’s atmosphere, the greenhouse gases created as a result of combustion cause the heat to get trapped in the atmosphere, contributing to the rising temperature of the earth’s atmosphere.
what are some of the possible solutions to mitigate the greenhouse effect?
- using more renewable energy sources such as solar and wind to combat the combustion of fossil fuels which prevents deforestation and mining.
- consuming a more plant-based diet
