the grandmaster Flashcards
what is hong kong known for?
- hong kong is a busy island that is a centre for trade and banking.
- worlds largest container port
- low taxes/relaxed trading laws
how does hong kong see cinema?
it is very business orientated and its main goal is to make profit. it has often treated its cinema as a means of making money through popular movies: such as kung fu or crime
new hong kong directors
Kar Wai is considered to be one of the new wave HK directors, focusing more on artistic films and other genres whilst showing other aspects of HK
why is the grandmaster a weird film?
it has 3 different genres inside of it, kung fu, romance and historical biopic
why don’t the 3 genres work?
kung fu - there’s no blood/gore and violence is obscured
romance - they don’t end up together in the end and then one love interest dies
historical biopic - Gong Er isn’t real so technically isn’t historically accurate
why were fans of these 3 genres disappointed?
because each genre had something unconventional or disappointing to them, so fans would leave unsatisfied and upset that the genre that they were promised wasn’t there - whilst they had to sit through 2 other opposite genres.
