Why can Athens be called a city of contrasts?
The homes they lived in were plain but, the public space is very large and beautiful.
How did Greek gods and goddesses play apart in Athenians lives?
The Athenian people would ask the gods for advice and they would also hold festivals for them.
What were the gods and goddesses like?
They would human-like but did not age or die.
Why did the Greeks go to Delphi?
To get advice from the oracle.
What was the Parthenon?
It was a temple made to honor Athena.
What is a pediment?
The triangular part of the Parthenon.
What is a frieze?
A broad horizontal band of sculpted or painted decoration.
What is a Doric column?
One of the three different types of columns used in Athenian temples.
How did the sculptures change over time?
The sculptures became more realistic, had more natural poses, and had more details.
Who was Phidias?
He was a sculptor.
What did Phidias do?
He made the figures that would line the Parthenon.
What is the council of 500?
A group of men 30 years or older and only 500 names were chosen out of everyone.
What is the assembly? (Athens)
A group of 1000 people and if they did not have enough people they would round up more people and put red paint on them.
What is the council of elders?
Two kings that would inherited their spots and 28 other men 60 and over.
What is the assembly? (Sparta)
Had little power could only say yes and no and had to be a male citizen.
What was the education like in Sparta?
Sparta would train kids to fight and right after put them in the army.
What was education like in Athens?
Athens were taught to read, write, and also taught literature.
What was the Golden Age?
A time were Athens had great wealth and great peace.
