What was Zeus’ role?
King of the gods, he was responsible for the weather, justice and the protection of foreign travellers.
What are Zeus’ symbols?
Often portrayed holding either a thunderbolt, or sitting on a throne with a crown and sceptre.
What is the role of Hera?
Queen of the gods and wife of Zeus. Particularly important from women as the goddess of marriage.
What are Hera’s symbols?
Often portrayed as a royal figure, wearing a crown.
What is the role of Demeter?
Goddess of the crops and harvest, a crucial role in an agricultural society such as Ancient Greece.
How is Demeter portrayed?
Often pictured alongside flowers, fruit or grain, especially sheaves.
What is the role of Poseidon?
God of the sea, another vital role in Ancient Greece, where the people were surrounded by the seas and often made difficult voyages. Also the god of horses and earthquakes.
How was Poseidon portrayed?
Depicted alongside dolphins holding his trident. Riding a horse drawn carriage.
What is the role of Hephaestus?
The god of metal working, fire and artisans.
How is Hephaestus portrayed?
Portrayed around the weapons or jewellery he made, holding an axe surrounded by his tools.
What is the role of Apollo?
Oversaw music, the arts, education and medicine and disease, as well as prophecy, archery and he sun.
How is Apollo portrayed?
Portrayed as a handsome young man holding a quiver of arrows of a lyre.
What is the role of Artemis?
Responsible of the moon, hunting, childhood and childbirth.
What was the role of Athene?
Responsible for tactical warfare and wisdom, as well as weaving and handicrafts. Founder of Athens.
How is Athene portrayed?
With her sacred bird the owl, in armour with weapons. Also wearing the aegis, which was made of goat skin, fringed with images of snakes and had a picture of a gorgons’s head in its centre.
