The Gingival Crevice Flashcards
1
Q
What is the gingival crevice?
A
The sulcular area from the tip of the ID papillae to the coronal surface of the JE. It extends from the GM to MGJ. i.e. narrow gap surrounding tooth
2
Q
What is the gingival crevice made of?
A
Epithelial lining and connective tissue.
3
Q
What is the depth of the gingival crevice in health?
A
0-3mm
4
Q
What are the 3 components of the gingival crevice?
A
Oral epithelium
Crevicular/sulcular epithelium
Junctional epithelium
5
Q
Describe the oral epithelium of the ginigval crevice
A
- runs from MGE to tip of papillae
- stratified squamous epithelium, keratinised
- has rete pegs, small intercellular space, desmosomes, basal cells and hemi desmosomes
- exposed to oral environment
- turnover of 1 month
6
Q
Describe the crevicular/sulcular epithelium of the ginigval crevice
A
- lines coronal part of crevice
- resembles OE but not fully keratinised
- SSE and para keratinised
- has rete pegs and connective tissue papillae
7
Q
Describe the junctional epithelium of the ginigval crevice
A
- starts at bottom of GC and runs down to CEJ
- unites gingival connective tissue to enamel surface
- non keratinised, no rete pegs so little structural support and so is weak
- large intercellular spaces so permeable
- cells larger than in OE
- fast turnover 2-6 days
