What were the state and Federal Governments concerned with?
-the social and economic impact of industrialisation and high level of immigration
What did the impetus (motivation) turn from?
from reform to expansion
What was life for African Americans like?
-segregation was officially approved by the Supreme Court in 1896->the political benefits for African Americans were severely reduced
What was life like for women?
-women continued to take an active role in public activities->there was little progress in achieving the right to vote nationally
-economic diversification and expansion offered more opportunities for jobs->needed an educated workforce->women made progress in education
-position of workers didn’t improve much->wasn’t helped by the violent actions of some strikers
What was life like for Native Americans?
-their position continued to decline as the reservations on which the US government had forced them to live were gradually reduced
