Describe the structure of German administration.
A
- Governor; was that the top and had ultimate authority over the colony.
- Regional Commissioners; Responsible for local administration and maintaining law and order in the respective regions
- Local chiefs were also known as Jumbes; responsible for implementing colonial policies and maintaining order at the local level
- The regional commissioners were divided into two those of the coastal towns called Liwali or Arab Governor and those of the interior known as Akidas.

Why did Germany use indirect rule in Tanganyika?
A
- limited resources and manpower
- It allowed the maintenance of control with minimal resources
- German recognised importance of local customs and traditions in maintaining social order and stability
- Indirect rule was more cost-effective
- indirect rule would help legitimise German rule in the eyes of local people
