What were the three principles of the French Revolution?
Liberty, fraternity & equality. (liberte, egalite, fraternite)
What day did the French Revolution begin?
July 14th, 1789 - Storming of the Bastille.
How were the societal classes separated?
Estates - The three estates were the different classes in France at the time of the revolution, each representing a particular segment of society.
Who made up the First Estate?
The Clergy; this included priests and anyone who had an authoritative religious position.
Who made up the Second Estate?
Nobles and members of the royal family, excluding the King.
Who made up the Third Estate?
Everyone else. Peasants, those from the working class and the wealthy business class. The only class required to pay taxes.
What was the system that pre-Revolution France operated under?
The Feudal system.
What did the Third Estate rename themselves to?
The National Assembly.
What was the Tennis Court Oath, and when was it?
The National Assembly met in a Tennis Court and refused to leave, despite the upper Estate’s orders, until the French Constiution was changed and the Feudal system was abolished.
