What is devolution?
the transfer of powers and funding from national to local government

What were the terms of the Good Friday agreement?
- Creating a power sharing agreement that included all governments
- NI would remain in the UK until a majority of people in all of Ireland wanted to leave the UK
- Both IRA and Unionist paramilitary groups agreed a creasefire and to decommission their weapons
- Paramilitary prisoners from both sides were released
What is Sinn Féin ?
A political party dedicated to the unification of Ireland and were the political representatives of the IRA
What were the troubles?
an ongoing conflict which occurred in NI between nationalist and unionist communities
When did the troubles occur?
the late 1960s to 1998
What were the causes of ‘the troubles’?
- British conquest and colonisation: the Catholics and Protestants have differing political outlooks. Catholics consider themselves Irish and hold nationalist views (they want an independent Ireland free from British control) whereas protestants identify largely as British and wish to remain in the UK
- The partition of Ireland: In May 1921, the government of Ireland Act of Ireland was passed which divided Ireland in two and brought together 6 counties to form the self-governing region of Northern Ireland, whose population was mainly loyalist and Protestant

13 people are shot dead and at 15 others are injured when members of the British Army opened fire on civil rights demonstrators in the Bogside
