The Formation & Processes of a Coastal System Flashcards
Estuarine coastline
a partially enclosed area of water on the coast where saltwater from the sea mixes with fresh water from rivers and streams
Littoral zone
the near shore area where
sunlight penetrates sediments, allowing for aquatic life to flourish, but faces rapid continuous change
Backshore
inland limit of the beach; waves only reach this area during exceptionally high tides
Nearshore
region close to the sea
Offshore
the sea away from land
Rocky coast characteristics
- high energy environment where erosion can continuously occur
Jointing
fracture dividing rocks
Dip
Indentations
Faulting
Cracks in crust
Folding
overlapping of the earth’s crust to create ridges
Concordant coastlines
Run parallel to the coast and have the same type of rock along its length. Dalmatian and Haff morphology occurs on these coastline
Discordant coastlines
Bands of rock and layers run perpendicular to the coastline alternating between hard rock and soft rocks. Headlands and Bays occur at these coastlines
Vegetation role in coastlines
stabilises sandy coastlines, provides habitats and flood defences
