Q

What did May and Hamilton do and find?

A

They asked female students to say how much they
liked the look of male strangers whose photographs
they were given.
The participants were placed in 3 conditions:
Listening to pleasant music
Listening to unpleasant music
And listening to no music at all
The results found that the female students who had
heard the pleasant music whilst looking at the photos
liked the men best and rated them as better looking.

Q

What is the dance study and what did Walster find?

A

752 undergraduates from the University of Minnesota
where invited to a ‘get acquainted dance’.
They believed they had been matched with their date, although they were randomly allocated partners.
The success of these random matches was assessed using questionnaires distributed in an interval during the
dance, and then in a follow-up 6 months later.
However, once participants had met their matches,
and regardless of their own level of physical
attractiveness, they reacted more positively to physically attractive dates, and were more likely to try to arrange
subsequent dates with them.
Other factors such as intelligence or personality did not
affect liking for the dates or subsequent attempts to see
them again. The only thing that mattered was
PHYSICAL ATTRACTIVENESS.
