What was the USSR like when Stalin came to power?
It was not yet fully industrialised and had not reached a state of communism that the Bolshevik leaders had imagined. The country’s had a mixed economy (private and state enterprise) because of the NEP and had no equal distribution of wealth.
Why did Stalin reject the NEP and what did he replace it with?
It’s private enterprise (and capitalist ideas) contradicted his potent socialist ideals. Thus, he introduced a sets of five year plans to improve USSR industrial, economic and agricultural developement
Why did he want to start an economic revolution?
He wanted to transform Russia to a rival power to the western capitalist nations (USA)

State Planning Commission (GOSPLAN)
