The Five Reactions To Danger Flashcards
Fight
Physically fighting someone off with actions that could include pushing, struggling, verbal fighting (saying no)
Flight
Physically trying to put distance between themselves and the danger with actions such as backing away, hiding, or running away
Freeze
This is a natural bodily response to danger; it is a survival instinct and does NOT indicate consent. Freeze behaviours might be going tense, still and not saying anything
Flop
This is like the survival instinct of freeze except someone’s body goes floppy and the muscles go loose, this is a survival instinct to reduce the pain of what’s happening
Friend
This can have two different responses, one may be calling/shouting for help from a friend or bystander but the other is to try and befriend the attacker by trying to talk with them, plead with them, bribe them or trying to placate (make them less angry/hostile) them. This is NOT consent it is a survival instinct
How long can it take your brain or body to return to a normal state after a perceived threat?
3-4 hours
