What was the Sino-Soviet Mutual assistance treaty?
The treaty, signed in February 1950 stated the two powers help each other economically.
After the armistice was signed in Korea was signed in July 1953 the USSR began to support the China’s 5year plan. The Soviet support was extensive and included:
the construction or reconstruction of 156 major industrial enterprises
Industrial experts to aid the centrally planned economy, the soviets sent 11,000 experts to train the workers.
Invited 28,000 Chinese technicians to study in Russia
A loan of 300 million US dollars over the next five years.
What was the aim of the 5 year plan?
The plan was announced in 1952 and closely mirrored the Soviet model. It especially focused on heavy industry, with clear production targets set and monitored by the CCP.
Stalin had transformed Russia from a backwards economy to a world super power that defeated the advanced Nazi’s in WWII. Mao hoped to achieve a similar feet promising the “Soviet Unions today is our tomorrow”
The decision was also practical as well as ideological, the USSR was now China’s major ally after China was hit with trade embargos following the Korean war.
