Full cold in 8 principles
excess
interior or exterior
coldness
yin

Full Heat in 8 Principles
excess
Interior or exterior
Heat
Yang
yin def, yang excess
False cold in 8 principles
Deficient
Internal
Cold
Yin
Normal yin, deficient yang
(Appearance of yin XS)
False heat in 8 principles
Deficient
Internal
Heat
Yang
Def yin, normal yang (appearance of heat)
Blood patterns don’t manifest with…
Temperature change
Symptoms of false heat
Night sweats
Afternoon/evening mild fever
Heat in palms (5 hearts)
Name the 6 external causes (climactic factors) and their associates season
- Wind (Spring)
- Cold (winter)
- Summer heat
- Fire of summer (summer)
- Dampness (late summer)
- Dryness (autumn)
Liver hates…
Wind
Lungs loath …
Cold
Heart loathes …
Heat
Spleen loathes …
Dampness
Kidneys loathe…
Dryness
Symptoms of wind
Symptoms that are suddenly and change rapidly
“The 100 diseases come in with the wind.”
Symptoms of cold
Contraction leads to pain and watery discharge (i.e. Runny nose, alternating chills and fever
S/S of summer heat
Exterior Heat attacking through mouth and nose
S/S of fire of summer
Extreme heat, thirst, mental restlessness
S/S of dampness
Manifesting with gradual onset, leading to turbid sticky discharge via vagina, nose, lungs
S/S of drynes
Manifests with dry body fluids and rising heat
All external causes lead to…
Pathogenic invasion
What are the internal causes of disease?
Years of stagnation of any of the 7 emotions
Internal effect of anger
Makes Qi rise effecting the lover which creates def in st/sp or Ht
Internal effects of excess joy
Makes Qi slow down and effects the Ht fire rising, def Ht yin or empty heat
(Verbal diarrhea)
Internal effect of worry/pensiveness
Knot the Qi effecting the spleen (and lungs), def Qi
Internal effects of sadness
Dissolves Qi effecting the lungs and therefore effecting the Ht - upper jiao obstruction
Internal effects of fear
Depletes the Qi effecting Kd yin - wasp deficient yin
Fear depletes Qi/makes Qi descend
Internal effect of shock
Scatters the Qi effecting the Kd and Ht yin (really adrenal - “shock absorbers” - Jing)
Long term Qi stagnation will produce…
Heat
Heat injures the yin
Floating/superficial
Barely touching radial pulse and feel it
Excess pulse
Signifies exterior invasion (wind, cold, damp, heat)
- if also tight, then wind cold
- if also rapid, heat heat
- if also slippery, then wind
Deep pulse
Only felt close to the bone
Deficient pulse
Always sign of interior pathology of the zang organ
Slow pulse
Cold pattern
If also empty, then deficient yang manifesting with coldness
If also full, the full/true cold
Empty pulse
Feels big but soft
Signifies deficient Qi
Full pulse
Hard and long (like Nathan’s hot dog)
Full pattern (true heat/true cold) Full and slow, then full cold
Rapid pulse
Heat pattern = empty heat due to deficient yin
Full and rapid = full heat
Slippery pulse
Feels smooth, round and oily, feels like sliding under fingers
Pulse of pregnancy
Indications: phlegm accumulation, dampness, food retention
Weak pulse
Can’t be felt at superficial level - only deep and if soft equals a deficient yang
Weak and slippery: phlegm stagnation due to deficient Qi leading to damp accumulation
Choppy pulse
Feels rough, indicates deficient blood pattern
Fine pulse
Thready
Deficient pulse
Describe the flow of the TM channels
Start at Jingwell and flow up to trunk and head

- Serve as a link btw pre and post-natal Qi (can be used in cars of weak constitution w/ digestive symptoms)
- Exert influence on Ht
Functions of Dai Mai
- Harmonize the liver and gallbladder
- Disperse damp heat in the genitals
- In disharmony, can impair circulation to the leg channels, which it encircles
- Tonify the Sp and St channels, which are particularly effected by Dai Mai
