Introduction
2nd most common cancer in UK, with the main cause being smoking.
The use of science and technology in diagnosis
- CT scan of a patient shows cancer might be present in the lungs. Dye given.
- Not very advanced cancer - PET-CT scan given. Radioactive material injected.
OR - Advanced cancer - bronchoscopy given (collects a sample of cells)
- After identifying type and severity of cancer, a treatment plan is given.
The use of science and technology in lung cancer treatment
Transplant - new lung given to patient.
Radiotherapy - radiation aimed at tumour to shrink it.
Chemotherapy - drugs given to shrink the tumour.
Genetic research - not yet possible.
Prevention
The govt. was slow to take action:
Health Act (banned smoking in all workplaces/public places)
Ban was extended to cars carrying children under 18.
Raised legal age to buy tobacco from 16 to 18.
Raised taxation on tobacco products.
Banned tobacco advertising.
Campaigned to advertise the dangers of smoking.
Removed tobacco from display in all shops.
