Q

After the 1982 invasion, what were the steps the Israeli army took to assure that there would be no “terrorists” remaining to attack the Israeli army during their retreat?

A

According to Hirsh Goodman, they conducted live-firing squads which cosnistued of indiscriminately shooting ruins and orchards along the way, essentially shooting randomly as they traversed Lebanese roads. A U.S marine commander complained that this put U.S soldiers in the Southern Beirut Sector at risk and the Israeli army responded by only shooting the side of the highway away from U.S marines.

Q

In the Lebanon Invasion of 1982, what was the Israeli strategy?

A

Israel infiltrated from the south and pushed the Lebanese and PLO to West Beirut where they cut off supplies and mercilessly bombarded the civilian population. It could be argued that rather than the PLO “holding Lebanon hostage”, Israel held the Lebanese people hostage until the PLO was forced to retreat.

Q

Did the PLO block exit from West Beirut during the Lebanon War? How about Israel? How about the Phalangists?

A

No. Reports of Western journalists in Beirut and others indicate that people could freely leave and that they did not consider themselves PLO hostages. (Israel in Lebanon , pg. 77) For those trying to escape through East Beirut, Israeli authorities and police detained them and sent them back their way. According to Martin Howe, the Phalangists refused exit to anyone without friends or relatives in Christian East Beirut.

A

About 2000 Jews.Although this is partly the fault of Israel, as the Israeli army prevented civilians from leaving the town and too many military centers were in the midst of civilian population. However, this does not justify the killings.

Q

in 1903, in Kishinev, what occured during the Christian Passover?

A

A rumor was spread about the killing of a Christian servant girl, which was ascribed to the Jews. This rumor, along with a rumor that the Tsar had allowed for a “bloody punishment” during the Passover, was spread by a conspiring secret organization which involved police and presumably the governor, leading to a riot which destroyed Jewish homes, stores, and , on the second day of passover on April 17th, led to the massacre of 45 Jews, 86 Jews being severely injured or crippled, and five hundred otherwise wounded and an undetermined amount raped. All of this occurred without any interference of the police or the governor for two days straight.Low level killers and plunderers were put on trial before the world while the organizers and government consiprators were left scott-free.

A

The Israeli-backed Maronite and Haddad forces had overpowered the Muslim-Palestinian Coalition after Israeli forces drove out the PLO

17

A

over 20,000 killed and over 30,000 wounded, almost 7000 in Beirut where 80-90% were civilians. Again these are bound to be underestimates.

18
Q

How did Israel tempt Syria to enter the war of 1982? How did Syria respond?

A

They began pushing towards Syrian positions and surrounding the Bekaa valley and Sharon had already set out his “large plan” to drive the Syrians out of Lebanon. The Syrian government had done its best to avoid conflict by not mobilizing reserves until June 9th and ordering that they were not to fire or even respond to Israeli sheling. However they did attack on June 9th, after which Israel retaliated “unprovoked?”

19
Q

Why were Syrians in Lebanon?

A

Syrians were in Lebanon at the time under the Arab League Mandate that was to expire in July 1982, having been initially tacitly supported by the U.S and Israel because they were fighting against the PLO-Muslim coalition. Remember, this was Ze’evv Schiff, who was a well respected military correspondent by Israel.

20
Q

What was Sadat’s Peace Offer of 1971?

A

In 1971, after the death of Nasser, Answar Saddat, the new president of Egypt, offered a peace plan to Israel which included secured pre-1967 borders, which made no statement with regards to “Palestenian rights”. This was promptly rejected by Israel and settlement actually increased.

21
Q

Who was Harold Saunders and what was his analysis of the Israeli strategy in Lebanon?

A

He acknowledged that the destruction of the PLO as a representative of the Palestinian people, or Palestenian representation in general, was the aim of Israel in the name of subduing the Palestenian people of the West Bank and Gaza so they will accept “permanent Israeli control” and that they should be induced to “migrate across the Jordan River”. “Thus, the Israeli-Palestinian War [in Lebanon] was fought mainly over whether a viable political representative of the Palestinian people shall remain to ensure that Israel and the Palestenians could negotiate on eq
