because China was self-sufficient. However, Britain wanted to buy Chinese porcelain, tea & silk. To ensure that China needed something from them, Britain sold
opium to China. Opium is highly addictive and
destructive.

China tried to ban opium and confiscated all the opium. Britain fought against China which resulted in the first and second opium war (1856 - 1860) as well as the First Sino - the Japanese war, which China lost both wars.
