Remained biggest party, but support started to decline

Supported Hitler, wanted to use him to gain power
Convinced Hindenburg to appoint Hitler, believing it would help fight against communism + bring order

Early 1930s - worried about Nazis, thought he could control Hitler
Jan 1933 - made Hitler chancellor, thinking it would help stabilise the government

Franz von Papen - thought he could control Hitler
President Hindenburg - agreed to make Hitler Chancellor
This led to Hitler gaining more power
What was the Great Depression
Economic crisis, started in 1919 - late 1930s
Began when stock market in the U.S. crashed - caused many banks to close, businesses to fail
Lots of people lost their jobs + homes, many were poor
Countries struggled with high unemployment + less trade
Governments tried to help, took a while for things to get better
