The Eye Flashcards
The Retina
The retina is found at the back of the eye, it is the receptor cell that detects light
What do rods do in the eye
Rods detects light only
What do cones do in the eye
Cones detect colour only
What are cataracts
Cataracts happen when protein builds up in the lens making it appear cloudy
Can cataracts be fixed
Yes, the lens can be replaced with a plastic one
What is colour blindness
Colour blindness is when one or more of the cones in the eye doesn’t work correctly
Can colour blindness be fixed
No, but you can get glasses to help
Short sightedness
The ‘short sighted’ eyeball is too long so the image focuses in front of the retina
How can short sightedness be corrected
It can be corrected by a diverging lens that spreads out the rays before they meet the retina.
Long sightedness
The ‘long sighted’ eyeball is too short so the image is focused behind the retina
How can long sightedness be corrected
Long sightedness can be corrected by using a converging lens to bend rays before they reach the eye.
How is information detected by the retina is transmitted to the brain
It’s transmitted through the optic nerve
How does the conjunctiva help protect the eye
When blinked, the eyelids help spread tears evenly over the surface of the eye. Tears keep the surface of the eye moist. Without moisture the normally transparent cornea becomes dried, injured, infected and opaque
