The Eye Flashcards
How does the eye focus on nearby objects?
ciliary muscles contract
suspensory ligaments slacken
lens is thick
light is strongly refracted
light rays are focused onto the retina
How does the eye focus on distant objects?
ciliary muscles relax
suspensory ligaments tighten
lens is thin
light is slightly refracted
light rays are focused onto the retina
What is accommodation?
the process of changing the shape of the lens to focus on near or distant objects
What is refraction?
the changing direction of light rays as they travel from one medium to another
How does the pupil react to bright light?
circular muscles contract
radial muscles relax
pupil constricts to reduce light entering the eye
How does the pupil react to dim light?
circular muscles relax
radial muscles contract
pupil dilates to allow more light in
