The Eye Flashcards
What are the parts of an eye?(9)
Sclera
Cornea
Iris
Pupil
Lens
Retina
Ciliary muscles
Suspension ligaments
Optic nerve
What is the sclera?
It is a the tough, supporting wall of the eye
What is the cornea
The cornea is the transparent outer layer found at the front of the eye. It refracts light into the eye.
What does refract mean?
Bend. The cornea refracts light into the eye
What is the iris?
The iris contains muscles that allow it to control the diameter of the pupil and therefore how much light enters the eye.
What is the pupil?
The pupil is the dark hole in the middle of the eye. It controls how much light enters the eye.
What is the lens?
The lenses focuses the light onto the retina.
What is the retina?
It contains receptor cells sensitive to light intensity and colour.
What do the ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments do?
They control the shape of the lenses.
What is the optic nerve?
The optic nerve carries impulses from the receptors on the retina to the brain.
What is the iris reflex?
The Iris reflex Is the eyes adjustment to bright light
Why does the eye adjust for light?
Because bright light can damage the retina so you have a reflex to protect it
