Why is the extracellular matrix necessary?
A
Cells must be supported and if they detach from ECM cells will die of anoikis.

What does the ECM do?
A
Forms basement membranes to provide anchoring support, tensile strength and flexibility. ECM is produced by stroll cells within the matrix.

What are the physical properties of the ECM?
A
Rigidity, density, porosity, insolubility and topography.

What are the 5 main ECM proteins?
A
Collagens, laminas, vitronectin, fibronectin and elastin.
