The Exmoor Mires Project Flashcards
1
Q
Aims of the project
A
To restore 2000ha of Exmoor to the boggy conditions by blocking drainage ditches with peat blocks and moorland bales
2
Q
Benefits of the project
A
- More water storage in upper catchments (increased storage capacity and slower water transfer)
- Improved water quality (slower throughflow means less sediment. Water is cleaner and less expensive to treat, and good for wildlife)
- More carbon storage (it is naturally absorbed by wet peatland)
- Improved opportunities for education, leisure and recreation (plus opportunities for species)
- Improved grazing and water supply for animals
3
Q
Extent of project
A
By 2015, over 1000ha had been restored and nearly 100km of ditches blocked, raising the water table by 2.65cm.
4
Q
What does the data show?
A
The water tables have risen, showing moisture is being retained.
Storm flow and flood peaks have been reduced and baseflow has increased.
