When was the Great War?
The Great War started in 1914 and ended in 1918.
What did Scottish regiments wear?
The Scottish regiments would wear kilts and carry bagpipes.
What reasons did people have for joining the army?
Reasons for joining the army:
- young men identified with their local regiment
- young men wanted to wear the uniform
- there weren’t enough jobs for them
- they wanted to impress their families and women
- they though of war as an adventure and a way to see the world
- they wanted to protect people and their country ‘for King and Country’
-they heard the propaganda and thought the Germans were barbarians who needed to be killed
- they though it would be a short war and that they’d be home for Christmas
-they wanted everyone to think they were a hero and didn’t want to be see as a coward
What type of regiments was the British army made up of?
Regular and territorial regiments made up the British army.
How many people were in the British Expeditionary Force when it was sent to France?
Only 250000 people were in the B.E.F meaning they were far smaller than the German army.
Where was the German army going?
The German army was trying to get to Paris through Belgium and northern France
What is a conscription?
A conscription is a compulsory enlistment meaning in war if there was a conscription if you didn’t want to go to war you’d be forced.
How did the British army recruit soldiers?
Lord Kitchener (the minister of war) was asked to get volunteers as the British army didn’t start with a conscription
When the British army suffered high casualties in the first few months what age of volunteers did they ask for?
Ages 19-35 we’re asked to join up
What were territorial regiments?
Territorial regiments were made up of part-time soldiers who were meant to be kept in reserve but were quickly called up for front-line battle. Territorial regiments were organised by geographical areas.
What were Pals Battalions?
Pals Battalions we’re created in Scotland and England as a way to stay with your friends, neighbours and workmates in war to boost moral. Sadly these Pals Battalions were a big mistake and instead of boosting moral soldiers had to watch their friends die while battalions were wiped out.
What is DORA?
The defence of the realm act.
Why was Britain run by a war cabinet?
Normal politics were suspended so Britain had to be run by a war cabinet.
What was DORA designed to do?
- Maximise industrial efficiency to help the war effort
- increase national security
- keep moral on the home front
Why did some people criticise DORA?
Many people felt that DORA gave the government to much power and took away their civil liberties. Some called the restrictions ‘petty’.
