  • propaganda (robert burns ‘take his tip’)
  • pals battalions (the highland light infantry made up of 3 glasgow pals battalions)
  • living conditions (no running water or windows)
  • unemployment (had been a problem for years)
  • pressure (woman would give men white feathers)
  • adventure( military films, thought it would be over by christmas, never left their town)
  • recruitment trams (trams we’re popular in glasgow, reached places where propaganda didn’t, sense of excitement)

what was the living conditions like

A
  • rats (could be the size of a cat, spread disease)
  • lice (men didn’t wash, didn’t wash in a month, constant itching, one man counted 163 on him)
  • trench foot (caused by damp coldness, would go numb skin would turn red or blue)
  • food and drink (tinned bully beef with bread or biscuits, little drinking water so drank rum instead, chlorine)

gas- phosgene, mustard, chlorine, urine cloths, they were quickly developed
tanks- strong metal vehicle, immune to gun shot bullets, very slow 4mph, hot cramped

  • women didn’t keep their wartime jobs, now stereotype were worse than ever
  • in 1918 the representation of the people act gave wealthy women over 30 the national vote
