- Stimulated demand fro manufactured goods like guns, clothing and transport.
- Provided financial infrastructure, government had a capital easing system in Wall Street.

In 1873, a Republican won the governor race, in retaliation, white supremacists and KKK members killed around 69 - 100 white and black men.

They had some political power in the south initially (Carolina and Mississippi, where they won a majority) and there were also two black senators and 20 black representatives in Congress
What were the economic effects of reconstruction?
- South benefitted from high cotton prices
- By 1870, average white southerner income had fallen 2/5 of that of an income of a northerner.
What were the political effects of reconstruction?
- North did not appear to be harsh enough on the South.
- Carpetbagger (a Northerner in the South after the American Civil War usually seeking private gain under the Reconstruction governments) influence exaggerated, some were corrupt but most people were.

Broke Tenure Office Act and fired Stanton, impeaching took place in 1868 by Senate, managed to stay in but lost credibility and effectiveness.
What was the Tenure of Office Act?
1867, prevented Johnson removing host of office holders, tried to stop the removal of Secretary of State Edwin M. Stanton.
What was the Civil Rights Bill 1866?
Passed by Congress to strengthen Freedman’s Buraeu, Johnson sided with Democrats and vetoed, but was overturned by Congress and passed.
