What is the enlightenment
Characteristics of philosophes
- ideological revolution
-intellectual movement characterised by the application of empiricism and rational thought to key issues - philosophes were skepitical and suspicious about key features of society that were based on tradition and supersititution

-critical of the church, social and political aspects
-economic structures
-power to people
-social contract
-separation of powers
-led to brith of liberalism which proposed ideas that are all men are born free and equal
-the main ideas of the FR established under enlightenment, liberty , fraternity and equality
What were philosophes ideas on existing systems
-not opposed to existing systems but encouraged the questioning of them and other alternative systems

-Scope (who and how many people were influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment?) Significance (did the ideas of the Enlightenment have a superficial or a fundamental impact?) Did it lead to revolutionary change?- radical vs moderate changes
