English and German. They translated it so that everyone could read it, because most people didn’t speak Latin.

Sir Walter Raleigh, a royal charter is a document that gave him the right to set up colonies, which would belong to England 
Where did Raleigh settle when he first came to America and why?
He settled with 100 people on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. He picked this location because the Indians were friendly, and the land was good for growing crops. 
Why did the colonists have to leave Roanoke island?
They had to leave because they ran out of supplies, and the Indians stopped helping them. They left in 1586.
In 1587, sir Walter Raleigh was going to return to North America a second time. Where did he want to settle the second time and how many ships did they come on? 
He wanted to settle in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. They came on three ships with men, women and children. He wanted to settle on Chesapeake Bay because it’s deeper, so big ships can come in. 
Did the colonist ever make it to Chesapeake Bay? 
No, the pilot refused to take them so they had to stay on Roanoke Island 
Who was in charge at Roanoke Island the second time that the English landed there?

The second time that they ran out of supplies on Roanoke Island, John White returned to England. Why couldn’t he bring supplies immediately to North America? 
Spain and England were at war, so it took him two years to return to Roanoke Island 
When John White returned to Roanoke Island in 1590, what did he say?
He saw a sign that said the Croatoan, which was the name of a nearby island, but he never found his people
