The energy of life Flashcards
what is a living cell and what it does
A miniature factory where thousands of reactions occur
it converts energy in many ways
What is energy
The capacity to cause change and it exists in various forms
What are the different types of energy
1.kinetic energy
2. potential energy
3. Chemical energy
What is thermodynamics
The study of energy transformation
What does the first law of thermodynamics state?
-Energy can be transferred and transformed
- Energy cannot be created or destroyed
What does the second law of thermodynamics state?
Spontaneous changes that don’t require outside energy increase entropy or disorder of the universe
What is free-energy change
energy that can do work under Cellular conditions
What is change in free energy during a biological process related to?
Is directly related to change in enthalpy(🔺️ H)and change in entropy
🔺️G=🔺️H-T🔺️S
During spontaneous change ?
-Free energy decreases and stability of system increases
At max stability
System is at equilibrium
An exergonic reaction
Proceeds with a net release of free energy and is spontaneous
An endergonic reaction
Absorbs free energy from its surroundings and is non spontaneous
How does ATP power Cellular work?
By coupling exergonic reactions to endergonic reactions
What are the three main kinds of work a cell does?
- Mechanical
- Transport
- Chemical
What is energy coupling
A key feature in the way cells manage their energy resources to do this work
