The Endocrine System Hormones Flashcards
Hormones of the anterior pituitary gland
FSH, LH, ACTH, TSH, Prolactin, ICSH, Growth hormone
hormones of the posterior pituitary gland
Oxytocin, ADH
hormones of the thyroid gland
thyroxin, calcitonin
hormones of the parathyroid gland
parathyroid hormone
hormones of the pancreas
insulin, glucagon
hormones of the adrenal medulla
epinephrine, norepinephrine
hormones of the adrenal cortex
cortisol, aldosterone
hormones of the pineal gland
melatonin
hormones of the testes
testosterone
hormones of the ovary
estrogen, progesterone
hypothalamus
causes the release of hormones in the anterior pituitary gland
FSH
stimulates the development of gametes, sperm, and eggs
LH
stimulates the release of sex hormones
ACTH
stimulates the adrenal cortex to release cortisol
TSH
stimulates the thyroid gland to release thyroxin
Prolactin
stimulates milk production in the mammary glands
ICSH
same as LH in males
Growth hormone
stimulates the liver to release growth factors in the bones and skeletal muscles
Oxytocin
stimulates contractions of smooth muscles in uterus and mammary glands
ADH
causes kidney tubules to become permeable to water, reducing urine output
Thyroxin
increases body’s metabolism
Calitonin
lowers blood calcium by putting it into bones and urine
Parathyroid hormone
increases blood calcium by removing it from the bones, increasing absorption to the intestines and kidney tubules
Insulin (beta cells)
reduces blood glucose by converting glucose into glycogen in the liver, making the body more permeable to glucose
Glucagon (alpha cells)
increases blood glucose by converting glycogen to glucose
Epinephrine
fight or flight
Norepinephrine
fight or flight
cortisol
long term stress response, raises blood glucose by breaking down proteins and fats
Aldosterone
causes reabsorption of sodium in kidney tubules and increases water reabsorption
Melatonin
circadian rhythms- sleep/wake cycle
Testosterone
essential for spermatogenesis, second male characteristics
Estrogen
thickens uterine lining, release of LH in females, secondary female characteristics
Progesterone
thickens uterine lining, prevents uterine contractions
