the endocrine system Flashcards
what is the role of the endocrine system
to supplement the nervous system.
The endocrine and nervous system work very closely together to regulate the physiological processes of the human body. However, instead of using nerves to transmit information, the endocrine system uses blood vessels to deliver hormones to their target sites in the body.
what is the role of the pituitary Gland
to influence the release of hormones for other glands, and in doing so regulate many of the bodies functions. The pituitary is controlled by the hypothalamus, a region of the brain just above the pituitary gland.
what is the pituitary gland split into
the anterior and the posterior pituitary. These release different hormones, which target different parts of the body.
what does the anterior pituitary gland produces
it releases ACTH as a response to stress, ACTH stimulates the adrenal glands to produce cortisol
Also releases hormones important to the reproductive functioning and sexual characteristics
what does the posterior pituitary gland produce
releases oxytocin, which stimulates contraction of the uterus during childbirth, and is important for mother-infant bonding.
what is the two different components of the adrenal gland
adrenal cortex - the outer part of the gland
adrenal medulla - inner region of the gland
what hormones does the adrenal cortex produce
cortisol, which regulates or supports a variety of important bodily functions including cardiovascular and anti-inflamitary functions
Also produces aldosterone, which is responsible for maintaining blood volume and blood pressure
what hormones does the adrenal medulla produce
releases adrenaline and noradrenaline, hormones that prepare the body for fight or flight.
