The Endocrine System Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
A network of glands
Store chemical messages (hormones)
Alongside the nervous system this regulates the psychological processes of the human body
The endocrine system uses blood vessels to deliver hormones to their target sites in the body
The target cell has receptors which the hormone fits into to activate it
Allows the CNS to target a large number of systems in the body
What does the system work like
A thermostats where the levels of hormones are increased/decreases as necessary by the areas (glands)which them
Why is negative feedback key
It is key because as the levels of the hormone increases it slows down and eventually stops the production of the hormone
What is the pituitary gland
A gland that produces hormones to influence the release of hormones from other glands to the bloodstream and produces hormones that travel to their specific target
The gland is controlled by by the hypothalamus
What is the pituitary gland controlled by
the hypothalamus
What hormone does the anterior (front) pituitary gland releases
ACTH
What hormone does the posterior (back) pituitary gland release
Oxytocin
What are the adrenal glands
Glands that are situated on top of the kidneys
What are the two parts of the adrenal glands
Adrenal cortex (outside)
Adrenal medulla (inside)
What hormone does the adrenal cortex release
Cortisol
What hormone does the adrenal medulla release
Adrenaline
