The Endocrine System Flashcards
1
Q
What does the Endocrine System do
A
Instructs glands to release hormones into the bloodstream
Hormones are carried towards target organs
Works alongside the Nervous System to control vital bodily functions
2
Q
What is a gland
A
An organ in the body that synthesises hormones
Produces hormones
3
Q
What does the pituitary gland do
A
The master gland
Controls the release of hormones from all the other endocrine glands
4
Q
Role of Adrenaline
A
Causes physiological changes in the body
Vital for fight or flight response
Has a strong effect on the cells of the cardiovascular system (stimulates heart rate, contracting blood vessels and dilating air passages)
5
Q
Describe the Fight or Flight response
A
- A stressor occurs
- The ANS changes from parasympathetic to sympathetic state
- Pituitary gland releases adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH)
- ACTH affects the cells in the adrenal glands causing them to release adrenaline
- Adrenaline causes physiological changes in the body which creates the arousal necessary for Fight or Flight response
- After Fight or Flight the Autonomic nervous system returns the body to the parasympathetic state, acting as a brake and slowing down activities
