The Endocrine System Flashcards
The Endocrine System
The body’s slow, chemical communication system that works by releasing hormones (received only specific sites) into the bloodstream.
Under normal circumstances, it works with our parasympathetic nervous system to sustain homeostasis and normal functioning.
In a crisis, it works to support the sympathetic system when
responding to a stressful situation.
Pituitary Gland
The “Master” Gland of the Endocrine System
Regulates the activity of all other glands in the Endocrine system.
The Pituitary Gland is under the control of the hypothalamus, and it sends out hormone signals to the other endocrine glands.
Thyroid Gland
Regulate metabolism, physical growth and development, and calcium rate.
Adrenal Gland
Regulate the fight or flight response and metabolism.
Pancreas
Regulate the level of sugar (glucose) in the
blood.
Gonads
Regulate bodily development (secondary sex development) and maintain reproductive organs in adults (produce sperm/eggs).
