The endocrine system Flashcards
What is the endocrine system
It is one of two major communication systems
What are the function of hormones
Chemical messengers that travel in the blood to target cells. They help regulate reproductive system, control growth and development, and help establish our circadium rhythm.
Name the 3 major structural hormones
1.amines e.g. dopamine
2.peptides and proteins e.g. insulin
3.steroids e.g. cortisol
What is hormone secretion controlled by
1.plasma concentration of an ion or nutrient that the hormone regulates e.g. insulin secretion
2.Neural input to the endocrine cells
3.Other hormones e.g. thyroid stimulating hormones.
What hormones stimulate the release of pituitary hormones
hypothalamic hormones
What is the role of the posterior pituitary gland
Secretes oxytocin and vasporessin hormones
What is the role of the anterior pituitary gland
Secretes prolactin, TSH, FSH, and LH
What is the role of thyroid hormones
Affect metabolism, important in the development of the nervous system
What is the role of cortisol
Involved in metabolic processes, has anti inflamontary and anti immune functions and is important in developmental hormone during fetal and neonatal life
What is the role of growth hormone
Major stimulus in postnatal growth
