The Endocrine System Flashcards
What are hormones?
Hormones are chemical messengers.
What are hormones produced in?
Endocrine glands that make up your endocrine system.
Name all the glands
The Pituitary Gland Thyroid Ovaries Testes Adrenal Gland The Pancreas
What does the Pituitary gland do?
Produces many hormones that regulate body conditions.
Why is the Pituitary Gland also known as the Master Gland?
Because the hormones it produces act on the other glands. Directing them to release hormones that release change.
What does the Thyroid gland do?
Produces Thyroxine which is involved in regulating things like the rate of metabolism, heart rate and temperature.
What do the ovaries do?
Produce oestrogen which is involved in the menstrual cycle
What does the adrenal gland do?
Produces adrenaline, which is used to prepare the body for a fight or flight response
What do the testes do?
Produces testosterone, which control puberty and sperm production in males
What does the pancreas do?
Produces insulin, which is used to regulate the blood glucose level.
What is the difference between hormones and nerves?
Nerves fast, hormones slow
Nerves act for a very short time, Hormones act for a long time
Nerves act on a very precise area, Hormones act in a more general way
Why are nervous responses really quick?
Some information needs to be passed to effectors really quickly e.g pain signals
There is no use using hormones to carry message, they’re too slow
When can you tell if your body is having a hormonal response?
You will feel a bit wobbly for a while afterwards.
