The EMS Flashcards
What is the EMS
The electromagnetic spectrum, a family of waves
What is the order of the EMS starting from the lowest frequency/smallest wavelength
Radio waves Microwaves Infrared Visible light Ultra violet X-rays Gamma rays
Radio wave information
Produced by - stars, radio transmitters
Detectors - aerial
Uses - communication, TV, radio, drones, walkie talkies
Dangerous no
Microwave information
Produced by - stars microwave transmitters
Detectors - water molecules in food, mobile phone, satellite dish
Uses - microwave oven, satellite TV, mobile phone
Dangerous no
Infrared information
Produced by - stars, anything hot (absolve absolute 0)
Detectors - skin , night vision goggles, CCD’s (change coupled device), thermometer
Uses - cooking food, night vision goggles, remote control (communication), keeping warm
Dangerous no
Visible light information
Produced by - stars, bulbs , fire ….
Detectors - eyes, photographic film , CCD’s, digital camera
Uses - communication
Dangerous no
Ultraviolet information
Produced by - stars, UV lamps, sun beds
Detectors - skin (bees eyes)
Uses - security, checking forgeries (paper money) , communication, checks finger prints
Dangerous yes causes cancer
X-ray information
Produced by - stars, X-ray tube
Detectors - CCD’s , photographic film (shadow image: x-rays pass through flesh/organs but are absorbed by bones/dense material
Uses- taking x-Ray images, security, treating cancer
Dangerous - yes causes cancer
Gamma rays information
Produced by - stars, radio active isotopes
Detected by - photographic film, Geiger muller counter
Uses - sterilising medical equipment, treating cancer, irradiating food (kills bacteria)
Dangerous - yes causes cancer
How does an aerial work
It absorbs radio waves (it’s made of metal) the delocalised electrons oscillate at the same frequency of the radio waves. There is an electric current witch converts into sound waves. ( TV converts into light waves)
